HOW TO STYLE A BLACK WEDDING CAKE BEAUTIFULLY
I have been so excited to share our incredible wedding cake y’all! It definitely wasn’t easy getting to the end result but that’s why you have to make sure you’re working with the right vendors for you and your significant other. Our wedding planner, Kendra, had a ton of connections and after hearing my inspiration for our wedding cake she said she thought she had the perfect baker for us. I looked up all her socials online and felt like she could pull of something amazing for us. The next step was to meet with her for a tasting and basically brainstorm. I, of course, had some inspiration photos from my Pinterest but overall wanted something unique to us and not a copy from a photo. Rachel from Blondie’s Bake Shop was the girl for us!
MY PINTEREST CAKE INSPIRATION
Of course, I’ve been creating a Pinterest wedding board since Pinterest came out but once we decided on a Spooky Chic wedding theme, I couldn’t stop looking at dark and spooky wedding cakes. These were the main three inspiration images I showed our baker and then she crafted the most amazing cake for us.
OUR BRAINSTORMING MEETING & TASTING
What’s awesome about Rachel is she has the option to order the flavors you want to try on her website before the tasting. On the day of, she brings cupcakes of those specific flavors you chose! I don’t know if everyone does this, but I really loved it. We chose:
Amaretto - Vanilla layers soaked in amaretto and frosted with an amaretto buttercream
Black Forest - Chocolate layers with a dark cherry filling and a fluffy buttercream
S’mores - Chocolate cake filled with marshmallow cream and frosted with vanilla buttercream and topped with graham
Pumpkin Spice - Dense pumpkin layers frosted in cinnamon cream cheese
White Chocolate Raspberry - White chocolate cake filled with raspberry and topped with white chocolate buttercream
Overall, they were all delicious but the Amaretto was DELICIOUS! It was like melt in your mouth YUMMY! Additionally, we decided to have the Pumpkin Spice too since we were having a fall wedding and your girl loves pumpkin!
OUR BEAUTIFUL BLACK CAKE
Our cake truly did exceed all our expectations and brought the spooky chic vibe we wanted plus added the brightness of the creams and oranges from our flowers. Like, I can’t get over this cake because it was STUNNING! I think the main thing that made it perfect was the communication between our baker and wedding planner who also did our florals. They were able to talk to one another and create this!! I will say, I had to put a lot of trust in them both because I didn’t think we were on the same page but by hiring a wedding planner that COMPLETELY understood my vibe helped bring everything in my head to life.
WHY WE DECIDED TO HAVE A FAKE CAKE
Yup. You read correctly. Our cake was fake! The icing was real and there was a little area in the back filled with real cake for us to cut for photos, but everything else was styrofoam covered in frosting. The overall reason we decided to do a fake cake is because it’s a lot easier to transport as big cakes like this get heavy and could easily get messed up on the transport to your venue. Our venue was also in the middle of nowhere with bumpy roads so we didn’t want to take ANY CHANCES. Finally, with black frosting comes black frosting teeth and we didn’t want our guests to have that. Our baker, Rachel, was able to make the Amaretto and Pumpkin Spice cake separately and then they served them in the back quickly and efficiently without having to take the cake back in the kitchen and slicing it up which takes a while. While we were cutting our fake cake, cake was being cut in the kitchen and when we finished everyone was eating cake too!
WHY WE DECIDED AGAINST TWO CAKES
Typically, or at least from what I’ve seen, there are two cakes at weddings. Sometimes people have pies or other desserts but we wanted just one big cake with two flavors. Cakes are expensive and we didn’t want to waste money on things people wouldn’t eat. Our cake was supposed to feed 100 people and we had 135 guests and still had cake left over!
OUR CHAMPAGNE FLUTES
Haha, so we didn’t actually have champagne in our flutes! We had our signature black margarita! This was such a fun thing to do after we cut our cake and these glasses are some of my favorites now. We got them from Bed, Bath, & Beyond. You can find them here.
Remember to stick to your vision and don’t let other’s opinions of what you want, hold you back. Not many people thought this cake could be what it was and once they saw this masterpiece they were instantly proven wrong. This cake was everything I could have wanted and more!
